My Two Cents Worth - 12

By Dale Moore

Do any of you readers know of a good foot therapist?  I am not talking about an orthopedic therapist.  I am already seeing one of those.  No, I don’t mean a podiatrist!  I mean a therapist therapist!  You see, my left foot has seemed very depressed of late.  It’s been some time since I’ve seen him kick up his heel.   Actually, now that I think about it, the problem may have actually begun several years ago.

At that time he exerted a great deal of responsibility and authority!  I owned a car that in order to start the engine, I had to turn the key and then the left foot pushed the clutch all the way to the floor thereby pushing the starter pedal under the clutch.  That foot controlled whether we went anywhere or not.  He was also responsible to engage the clutch, and took pride in releasing it at just the right speed, in coordination with his brother Right Foot who controlled the accelerator.  Lefty was also responsible to            push the high-beam switch, located on the floor just left of the clutch. Seems like he was always busy!

However, for some reason, the carmaker moved the starter to the dash, so Lefty lost that position of power.  Soon after that, the high-beam switch was moved to the turn signal arm and again poor foot felt a loss of responsibility and self-esteem.  I think the final straw was the day I purchased a car with automatic transmission and the clutch disappeared.  He really resented that!  For a while after that he would sometimes jump on the left edge of the brake throwing the front seat passengers into the dash.   Now he just lies on the floorboard, sometimes falling asleep.  It seems as though he has lost his sole!

Ironically, my right foot has been causing me a great deal of pain lately, especially after I have been out driving.  (That’s why I am seeing an orthopedic therapist.)   I have come to the conclusion that the right foot is now resentful of the fact that he has to endure the stress of holding the accelerator at a set speed and be constantly on the alert for any needed changes, while Lefty sleeps.   Maybe someone could devise a placebo pedal, that when pushed does nothing.  Perhaps that would resolve the entire dilemma.  To tell you the truth, with the situation between the two with of them, I’m feeling like a real heel.

And that’s my two cents worth
