With just 210 days till Christmas, you may appreciate a copy of this intercepted memo, which was reportedly circulated by a major department store chain. To: All Store Employees We once began our Christmas sales push the day after Thanksgiving by unveiling our beautiful decorations and welcoming Santa Claus. However, in order to increase business, and gain a competitive edge, we moved that date to Halloween. Of course, a selling season that long makes the customers lose interest so we were force to move our after Christmas sales to before Christmas. This past year we displayed our Christmas stock of games and decorations on October first, but it appears all the competition is doing the same. Therefore, we will institute the following sales schedule for nest year. In January we will hold the “After Christmas White Sale” and in February, “A Short Christmas Clean-up Sale.” March will feature the “Winds of Christmas Remnant Sale.” In April we push “Give the Christmas Gift That Lasts All Year! Celebrate the Birth and Death of the Christ Child!” May spotlights left over poinsettias for the garden. In June we will suggest, “Avoid the Christmas Crush! Buy the first Christmas gift for the bride and groom now!” “Christmas Shop on Your Vacation!” follows in July. August will stress “Save a Trip to the Mall! Do Your Christmas Shopping with your Back to School Shopping.” September offers a sneak preview of new Christmas lines. October features a “Harvest of Christmas Values.” November is set aside for the last minute shopper and December will be our Christmas Closeout. This schedule results in savings, as we no longer have to take down decorations or hire temporary help. The length of this program ensures more Christmas season profits. End of memo! “For unto you is born this day a Savior who is the Marketing Lord!”
