My Two Cents Worth - 5

By Dale Moore

Responsibility!  Now there’s a word that has become an endangered species!  It seems as though no one wants to assume responsibility for anything (at least anything bad.)  I have to pay extra car insurance for the uninsured motorist coverage who will not assume his/her responsibility.  Often they are same drivers who, when being cited by police for driving while intoxicated, sue the bar!  They loudly proclaim that the bartender is responsible.  “S/he should never have sold me all those drinks.”

And what politician in recent memory has assumed responsibility for LOSING an election.  They  pontificate on having won a moral victory; made a respectable showing; or pledge to continue to be a force for those who supported them.  What ever happened to, “ I fought a good fight but I lost.”

Democrats blame Republicans!   Liberals blame conservatives!  Most politicians can clearly define the foolishness of their opponent’s position yet cannot clearly define their own!  But then again, if one doesn’t talk about one’s own goals and program, no one can hold you responsible for a voting record.  .

And who is responsible for the problems our youth are experiencing?  Not their parents!  Nor do we even hold the kid responsible for bad choices s/he makes!  Society!  That’s who!  I have never been exactly clear on who “society” is, but then that’s the beauty of blaming some nebulous entity!  No one has to take responsibility!  Parents blame the school!  The school blames the parents or courts for not being tougher.  The courts blame the legislature for not giving them more money to work with the kids.  But we can’t give the schools and courts more money because we need it to build more juvenile prisons.

A friend of mine complained about the paint on his house peeling and fading.  He thinks the paint manufacturer should repaint his house.  It had to be their fault!  Obviously, it was bad paint.  The fact that it had been twenty-one years since he had purchased the cheapest paint and, without taking the time to properly prepare the siding, painted his house, did not mean he had any responsibility.

I hear there’s a movement to change our nation’s motto from “In God we trust” to “It’s not my fault!”

Well, good or bad, I AM responsible for this column!

And that’s my two cents worth
